This piece was painted as part of the Paint Topeka event and upcoming show sponsored by SouthWind Gallery in Topeka, Kansas. The exhibit will begin on July 6th. The subject is the alley view of the former Twilighters Bar in North Topeka, now known as NOTO. Definitely a piece of "local color"! I loved the geometric patterns of the buildings, the strong verticals of the power poles and the light patterns. I really enjoy finding subjects like this...that have a story to tell...and that many folks just wouldn't even notice. I have stacks of reference photos of similar places which I have set aside to paint. This painting was honored as a finalist in Southwest Art Magazine's Artistic Excellence Competition...an article about the competition was in the December 2012 issue of the magazine.
