This was painted to about 80% completion in two sessions on location in Zion National Park in April 2013. I finished it the studio. What a challenge it was to have to paint very quickly on this one due to the fleeting light in the evening...and with a pretty complicated subject too. I was captivated by the beautiful colors of the rock formations of Zion in the late day sun, and the patterns of light and shadow at this time of day. This is one of three of my paintings that was displayed at the Vashon-Maury Heritage Museum paired with Abby Williams Hill's historic painting, "Lady Mountain, Zion National Park" (1927, 31x41") pictured here in November 2013...part of the "Legacy of the West: Abby Williams Hill and Debra Joy Groesser, Two Women Artists Painting A Century Apart" exhibition.
