I’ve only been to Grand Canyon twice before this trip in February 2013, and because of time restrictions, was not able to paint either of those first trips. This is the first piece I painted on location there. A very difficult, challenging subject because of the sheer complexity of the landscape but it was exhilarating at the same time, attempting to capture the beautiful patterns in the land forms. The big shadow on the foreground rock disappeared about 20 minutes into the painting...the light changes so quickly there. A visit by a herd of elk as I was painting made this a memorable experience. There were lots of people there from all over the world as well. I can only imagine the quiet and solitude Abby Williams Hill must have experienced there 100 years ago.
